Astros Prospect Dealing With Injury
USA TODAY Sports

Wondering where Houston Astros top prospect Jacob Melton has been lately? Well, he’s been hurt.

The Athletic reported that Melton, who is the No. 1 prospect in the Astros’ organization, has been dealing with left hamstring discomfort and that has kept him out of the lineup at High Class-A Asheville since Aug. 8.

There was no update on when Melton might return.

A look at his MiLB.com page shows that he is active but that he last played on Aug. 8 when he went 0-for-3 against Hickory.

Melton ascended to the No. 1 spot after the Astros traded Drew Gilbert, along with Ryan Clifford, to the New York Mets to re-acquire Justin Verlander at the deadline.

Melton has been at Asheville all season, slashing .249/.344/.471/.815 with 18 home runs and 40 RBI. He’s also stolen 40 bases and scored 71 runs.

He spent 2022 with two different Astros affiliates, starting with the Astros’ Florida Complex League rookie team and then a promotion to Class-A Fayetteville. In 23 combined games he slashed .261/.353/.466/.819 with four home runs and 13 RBI.

Melton was the Astros’ second-round pick last July, selected out of Oregon State University.
